I love a marching band!
It’s Semana Santa and once again we are able to watch the parades as the various floats with sculptures representing scenes of The passion are carried around the streets. These floats can weigh several tonnes and need a small army to carry them. Often forgotten in all the glory are the Legion bands that provide the musical accompaniment and so, my little film concentrates on the band that was accompanying the statue of the Virgin. I was not able to stay long but you will see, at the beginning of this video, a few shots of the float of Jesus carrying his cross to Golgotha. These two floats perform a dance together as ‘mother and son’ meet and ‘bow’ to each other – this is quite a scene but I’m afraid I can only give you the vaguest hint of how it appears and great skill employed by the bearers of the floats and the controllers whose bells you will hear.
You might notice that the people passing me were all going in the same direction. They were heading towards the crowd of about 2,000 people who were just 100 mtrs behind me waiting to see the dance of the floats. There was no way that I could have survived that crush!
As for the House Martin’s nest at the end of the film, what can I say? “Oops?”
