Spain and religion

For this is my blood that has been shed for you.

For this is my blood that has been shed for you.

I am very lucky to live in Spain. Spanish people are open and willing to help. They are also pious.

Where ever you go in Spain you will see evidence of the country’s basic religion – Catholicism. There are churches, icons, and road side shrines all over the place. There is a beautiful one just down the road from my apartment. It is unusual not to see someone pass a shrine, bless themselves and say a little prayer.

Processions in honour of the various events in the one year life cycle of Jesus are attended by huge crowds. These crowds almost emit a feeling of devotion and praise that draws you in and makes you an integral part of the ceremonial.

Whether the Spanish are more religious than any other race I don’t know. What I do know is that the overwhelming emotional charge that is obtained from the crowds attending religious events can make a confirmed believer of me.

There is something in the air at Spanish religious events – and I don’t think it is mass hysteria.
