do the local politicians and the Junta de Andalucia really have to rub our noses in the fact that they care for nothing but the trough their snouts are in?
Even in a small locality like Coín/Alhaurin el Grande, it is desperately clear that nobody in authority gives a damn about our countryside. It seems, if they see a beauty spot, they must authorise its’ destruction.
Barranco Blanco is an absolutely classic case of rapid destruction of an area by a developer so that there can be no realistic possibility of bringing the desecration to a halt. La Mota Golf? Why on earth do we need another golf course across the road from Alhaurin Golf? What possible reason for it can there be? Las Lomas del Nacimiento? Why on earth do we need another golf course across the road from La Mota Golf? What possible reason for it can there be?
There can be only two reasons.
The first is that these areas are all of great natural beauty and give huge numbers of the population an open space for all sorts of recreational activities – and we can’t allow that to continue, can we?
The second is simple GREED. The true rulers of Andalucia, the property developers, see concrete where we see trees and huge profits where we see a national treasure (resource, at least).
Look at what has been done to Sierra Gorda. Not a very disappointing sight until the developers decided to rip the top off, pour it into a small valley and then destroy virtually all of the plant and wild life. Sierra Gorda now sits like a great pile of dog droppings in the middle of an area rich in olive and lemon groves. Where it once complemented the views, it now grates on the eye.
Let’s not mention the new Alhaurin by-pass. What a fiasco! There are very few people in the area that will be despoiled by this crazy scheme who can see a benefit. Alternative routes are available and even the Mayor of Alhaurin el Grande can see the damage that the by-pass will cause. Hopefully it will not be built since there is strong opposition before a sod has been turned but I fear the possibility of the new road opening up the probability of urbanisations (and golf courses) along its’ length will encourage the developers to spend even more money to buy the influence that they need.
Cabo de Gata. Remember that? It’s a huge and valuable natural park which was encroached upon by yet another destructive and avaricious developer who decided to build a bloody great hotel (El Algorrobico) right on the sea front – a place where there never was any doubt that they should not do it. During the building process there have been many, many attempts to stop this monstrosity being built but the developer carried on regardless. The Junta de Andalucia, in its’ wisdom (GREED?) has now decided to not only withdraw the threat of demolition against the hotel but to authorise massive and intrusive developments within the park (surprise, surprise) near the hotel! (I would love to know how much it cost to buy the politicians who made this disgusting policy reversal.)
There seems to me to be no doubt at all that palms are being greased in great quantity and that there simply is not the will to stop the disgraceful behaviour of too many local and national politicians – let alone the developers.
