One of the most common reasons for visiting the Costa del Sol, surprisingly, is not just the Sun, Sea and Sand but the SHOPPING. As a fairly well established resident, I find that the wealth and variety of shopping experiences available is simply overwhelming. We have, of course, the big cities like Malaga, Marbella, Seville, Cadiz and so on, but in every sizeable town there will still be delightful shopping possibilities to savour. Street markets are very popular and well patronised. Even the smaller ones will have a superb collection of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as hardware and clothes. On some of the larger markets it is possible to buy almost anything you might need. Apart from the markets and the inevitable out of town shopping centres, shopping in the smaller towns and villages can be quite an adventure. It still surprises me to find the front rooms of some of the old houses converted into small specialty shops selling anything from bread and cakes, hardware and clothing to hair dressing and health treatments. In the heat of summer it is fairly easy to spot these little shops but in the winter, unless you know where they are, you will never find them. One of the delights of living where I do is the way in which a simple trip to the market can become a leasurely stroll around the town - taking in some of the sights that would normally be missed. Unfortunately it is not a good idea to take my dogs with me - so, as you will see, they wait at home. Audio and Visual Products In this age of down loadable music and video one of the great movers and shakers in the distribution of such products is Amazon. Look on the Triple A web site and you will be able to see the above statement and the enormous amount of dedicated work that goes in to rescuing, healing and re-homing some of the thousands of abandoned pets that are found, here, on the Costa del Sol. At any one time it would not be unusual to find 260 dogs and 160 cats being lovingly cared for while new owners were being sought for them (many of them finding loving homes in Sweden, Holland and Germany). So why is this article on the shopping page? Every single pet rescued by Triple A was probably bought at some time. Maybe it was an irresistable ball of fluff in a pet shop window or a desperate looking, wriggling thing in a cardboard box on a street market. However this poor creature came into the posession of whoever abandoned it, of one thing we can be sure, there was insufficient heart in the new owner to make the life of the animal they had accepted the responsibility for, a happy one. While the presence of Triple A says a great deal for the compassion and care that does exist within the human heart, the fact that it exists is also a round condemnation of us, as human beings. Please. Please. Please. If you go shopping for a pet, make sure that you understand the commitment that you are making. Make sure you understand the needs of your new pet and how its needs will impact upon your life. Triple A and the wonderful people who work there do enjoy what they do but I am sure they would be a lot happier if they didn't have to do it. Look at their web site. Look at their success stories and then try to understand the bewilderment and fear that careless owners have bestowed upon innocent creatures that only ever wanted to love and be loved. Triple A has an enormous task in simply feeding their flock and paying for the help that has to be paid for. If you can help in any way, please do so.
